It's Our Turn!

A Long Time Coming, Yet Much Work Remains to be Done!
At the age of nine, as a cadet at Eastern Military Academy, I actually sketched out MY dream-wedding! The floral design, decor (linens, chargers, lighting), menu, environments, entertainment... the whole megillah! It took me a WEEK to get everything in my HEAD, down on that marble composition pad. I just KNEW that, when I was going to marry my husband (or wife), it. would. be. PERFECT! It made me feel hopeful, and "normal", and excited by the possibilities, and the beauty I could see in my head!
Even back THEN, I was a wedding and event designer! Sometimes, on weekends, when many of the cadets went home, I had the run of the estate, to wander the grounds, and dream, and work on my dreams in earnest (I also designed my dream home, named my children- --- a boy and a girl)! Not long after that, I came to realize that there would be no show-stopping wedding for me. In the fourth GRADE, I had to accept this! Now, thirty-plus years later, in several states in which I once lived, and left, marriage equality is now settled law!
In 1997, a seasoned, traveled, educated man (and an unintentional activist ("Equalist"), I took it upon myself to begin designing weddings for gay couples residing in, or visiting, Key West--- where i lived at the time. I was there in Key West on a six-month-long, professional, acting contract for South Florida's longest running professional musical: "Flamingo Follies", and a late-night revue called "Key West: Unzipped". After the show closed three years later... I had fallen in love with Key West, and wanted to stay, and make it my home-base.
The earliest weddings I designed were just REALLY SIMPLE affairs for single couples. Occasionally, a parent or best friend, or other relative might be in attendance. But those moments were rare. I had booked flautists, and harpists, and pianists; cakes, flowers, limos, and more for these events! I used libraries, restaurants, tropical gardens, forts, yachts, catamarans, public beaches... I gave them what they desired!
People soon began finding my little website, and referring friends, and , before I knew it, I had a busy calendar of bookings, and the LGBT couples were shocked, and relieved, that there was someone there (Me), that promised to create the most welcoming, "SAFE", respectful, secure, private, serene, and respected wedding they could ever hope for. I delivered exactly that, and more. I just couldn't tolerate that LGBT people were not allowed to enjoy their own special wedding day, just like any traditional couple. Then... traditional couples began to book me.
Now, nearly eighteen years later, after decades in hospitality, catering, event design, and event planning (beginning at the age of 9), certification... Even though I own many more businesses now, my heart remains "married" to assuring that LGBTQ couples will never have to endure the horrible discrimination, hate, rudeness, and disrespect of venues, vendors, and suppliers! I didn't tolerate it then--- and, even less so, now. Even with my other commitments in business, I've slated time to do a, very limited, number of bespoke wedding designs, worldwide. I intend to do that, for as long as my schedule will allow.
I'm in my late-forties now--- My compassion for LGBT couples, and ALL couples, remains just as intense, sincere, and solid, as it was all those years ago! The world is changing, and I'm fortunate enough to be alive to witness it in my lifetime! I've been working to honor and protect gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning queer folks--- for SO long---, I've even been called the "Gay Wedding Godfather", and "The Fairy Wedding Father"!
The Tide Has Turned:
A tidal wave of marriage equality is sweeping over the nation, and, clearly, will prevail countrywide. The Supreme Court will have to pick up this case, nationally. As I have been quoted to say, for decades, "There is no gray area in EQUALITY! Either it's EQUAL, or it "AIN'T!" Finally, my homeland is catching up with my fantasy of the freedom to marry!
The States Involved:
The 9th Circuit has caused quite a stir with recent rulings (as have many others)! Presently, more than thirty states are involved in some form of ruling, stay or appeal on the subject of marriage equality bans, and their unconstitutionality!
California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Utah, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Florida, Wyoming, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia,
So What Does it Mean? And What Has it got to do With YOU?
It MEANS, that "all men are created equal", is no longer only so much constitutionally-convenient lip-service, and bluster. I believe the founders were infinitely sincere in the gravitas, and intent, of those words! Our citizens are, FINALLY, starting to be able, and free, to basque in the protective comfort, and synergy, of that all-powerful phrase!
Congratulations America--- It has been a long time coming, yet much work remains to be done! #SOMEDAY, everyone will wonder what the hell all the FUSS was about! It's Our Turn! #equalitynow
I guess it also means, that when couples want to tie the knot--- in simple, elegant, glamorous, or outlandish, epic, style... and they want one of the longest-lasting, respected, lauded, veteran, GLBTI wedding specialists on their team, and in their corner for that, most-magical, day... that guy "AIN'T" so hard to FIND! I have patiently, faithfully, waited for this day! The day when I could serve the family without exception. I've kept the lights on, and the phone system cranking... and to be of service, even after all these years--- I'm still right HERE! :-P
