KEY WEST, FL – There’s been a flurry of activity on the marriage equity front.
City commissioners in Miami Beach have recognized the right of same-sex couples to behave legally as family. The
commission voted unanimously for a new domestic partnership registry, allowing nontraditional couples, visitors and
residents alike, to inform officials of their relationships.
Registration with the Beach city clerk’s office secures for domestic partners the same rights to hospital visitation,
health care, and end-of-life planning as married couples. It also provides for partners to participate in the education of
each other’s children. Beach officials previously had voted to include transgender people in the city’s anti-
discrimination ordinance.
“Miami Beach has long proclaimed itself the sun and fun capital of the world. Now city officials have proven their
dedication to enjoyment and security for everybody,” said Marc Savant, president and CEO of savvyplanners.com,
wedding and event planners specializing in service to the GLBTI community.
“Too bad a majority of Missouri voters aren’t equally fair-minded.” On Aug. 3, Missourians passed a ballot measure
amending their state constitution to limit legal marriage to couples of one woman and one man. Missouri was one of 38
states that already had a law so defining marriage.
“I guess the residents of the Show-Me State would prefer to keep their blinders on,” said Savant. “Surely a glance
around would reveal many of their neighbors, friends and co-workers to be committed to a family life they’ve just
unnecessarily voted to outlaw. Their actions unfairly deprive fellow citizens of the God-given right to pursue
happiness.” Several other states are set for similar constitutional showdowns.
But the news from the Pacific Northwest was more encouraging. A judge struck down a Washington state law defining
marriage as the union of a woman and a man, and ruled that the state constitution grants lesbian and gay couples the
right to marry.
But King County Superior Court Judge William L. Downing stayed his decision to let the state Supreme Court review it.
If the justices affirm it, Washington would become the second state, behind Massachusetts, to legalize same-sex
marriage.
“Progress almost never comes without a struggle,” Savant said. “This nation is built on the bedrock of equal treatment
for all. It may take some of us a while to realize that 'all' really does mean ‘everybody, no matter how different I think
they are from me,’ but I’m confident that everyone will realize this truth and be able to embrace it. I just hope it’s sooner
rather than later.”
